I had a two story "fuggly fireplace" in the old 80's brick that I painted white. It took me forever to decide since I knew there was no going back. Tough call as yours is pretty in white. Best of luck!
Oh, you guys, I wish this was my fireplace. Mine is enormous and not at all picture worthy although, I may dig one up just so you can see the improvement it would be with some white paint. Mine even has a shiny brass insert. It's embarrassing. Unfortunately, Husband will never go for it in a million years. That doesn't mean I won't keep trying to change his mind though.

i finally painted my 70's brick fireplace. wish I had done it sooner! I love it.
